Wasps vs Bees – How to Identify Them Before Arranging Pest Control in Long Eaton

Wasps and bees look similar to customers and staff alike. Here is how business owners can tell them apart quickly and decide what to do next without alarming anyone.

Why it matters more when the public is on site

A single wasp in a garden is a nuisance. A stream of wasps at a shop door, a pub garden, a school gate or a loading bay is a different matter, because customers, staff and visitors are all within reach. A business owner needs to know quickly whether the insects are wasps from a nest, bees from a hive or just passing visitors.

The answer decides who you call and how you speak to your people. Misidentifying honeybees as wasps means unnecessary and unwelcome work. Misidentifying a wasp nest as harmless bees can leave a real hazard beside an entrance.

This guide sets out a quick method for managers who want to be sure before picking up the phone.

There is a reputation question too. Customers who see wasps swarming at an entrance rarely complain to the wasps, they take it out on the business. Dealing with the issue quickly protects your trade as well as your people.

A one-minute check for a manager

You do not have to be an expert. A brief look from a safe distance, such as a window or the other side of a car park, gives you three useful observations.

Write the three answers on a note. It will be useful when you speak to us and when you brief your team.

If staff disagree about what they have seen, ask the person who is calmest to look from the same spot at the same time on two different days. Consistency is more reliable than a quick glance.

Photographs taken from a window of the insects and the entrance are useful, as long as nobody approaches the nest to take them. Share them if you wish, though a description will do.

Where nests turn up on commercial sites

Wasps will nest wherever they find a sheltered gap. On commercial sites, that includes roof edges, cladding, wall cavities, sheds, outbuildings, void spaces above ceilings, hedges, trees and disused equipment. A nest in a hardly used corner is often not noticed until midsummer, when thousands of wasps are in residence.

Walk the perimeter during the day and notice where insects are repeatedly entering a gap. Look at bin areas, delivery doors, smokers’ shelters and outdoor seating, since those are where food and drink draw them in.

Do not climb a ladder or lean out of a window to inspect closely. Report it and let the technician assess it.

Seasonal workplaces such as garden centres, cafes and holiday sites should look earlier than most. Nests start from late April depending on the weather, and a nest found in May is much easier to handle than one found in August.

Where food is served outside, the risk grows later in the summer. Stack bins away from doors and ask the cleaner to wash down any sticky surfaces.

Keeping staff and customers calm

A clear message prevents most trouble. Tell staff where the insects are, ask them to avoid the area, and give them a single person to report to. Cordon off the immediate zone if you can, using cones or tape placed well back.

Remind everyone not to swat at wasps. Quick arm movements provoke them. Cover drinks and food outdoors, and keep bins closed.

If someone is stung, they should wash the area, remove the sting if visible and apply a cold pack. If there is swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheezing, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999. Anyone with a known allergy should speak to their GP, and you should mention allergic staff or customers when you book so we can take it into account.

Put a simple line in your incident log noting the date and the place, so any later sting can be linked to what you did about it. How that affects insurance or responsibilities depends on your own policies and agreements, so check them directly.

When the insects are bees

If you believe they are honeybees, for instance a cluster hanging from a sign or fence, or bumblebees nesting in a planter or verge, do not attempt to remove them. Honeybees and bumblebees are important pollinators, so contact a local beekeeper or the relevant bee organisation.

Most bee situations resolve without intervention, and a short period of care, such as a rope barrier, is often all that is needed. We do not treat bees, hornets or other pests, and we will say so plainly if your description sounds like one of those.

A short briefing for reception staff helps, so that they can tell callers and visitors what is happening and avoid giving out guesses about the insects.
