Wasp Nest in a Cavity Wall – How Professionals Treat Hidden Nests in Melton Mowbray
Knowing what to expect from the phone call to the final check takes much of the worry out of having a hidden wasp nest in your wall dealt with.
Before anyone arrives
A hidden nest can feel like a mystery, and a mystery is more worrying than a task you understand. So here is the process from start to finish, in the order it normally happens.
The first step is the phone call. You describe what you have noticed, such as wasps going in and out of a gap, a sound in the wall or wasps in a room. We confirm that we can treat the problem, tell you the fixed price and agree a time. If someone in the household is allergic to wasp stings, say so at this point.
Many customers say the thing they most want to know is whether anything unexpected will happen. By describing the whole process, we hope to take that worry away. There are no tricks and no extras to find out about at the door.
The price and the agreement
Treating a wasp nest is a fixed £95 per nest, and any additional nest on the same property is £35 per nest. There is no call-out charge. The price is confirmed over the phone before the technician visits, and no work is done until you have agreed. You will not be asked for anything different on the doorstep.
This applies to homes and commercial premises in the same way, and we are open seven days a week with same-day service offered.
If you are booking on behalf of someone else, such as an elderly relative or a tenant, the same rules apply. We agree the price with the person who books, and we do nothing at the property until they say yes.
What you can do to prepare
- Keep children and pets indoors and away from the affected wall.
- Move bins, plant pots, bikes and garden furniture away from the part of the wall where the wasps go in.
- Make sure the technician can reach the outside of the wall, including a side passage or back gate if that is where the entrance is.
- Close windows on that side of the house.
- Have a note ready of where you have seen wasps and when.
You do not need to open the wall, take down plaster or empty a room.
It also helps to think about the time of day. Wasps are most active in warm, bright weather, which is when the entrance is easiest to find. If you can, tell us when you tend to see the busiest flight path.
Please also check whether the area has a pet door, a washing line or a play area close by. We do not mind any of those being in the way, but it is easier to move them before the technician arrives than to work around them.
On site
The technician starts by looking, not treating. They will watch the wall for a short while, work out which opening the wasps are using and decide on the best approach. In a cavity wall, that entrance is the key, because the nest itself is out of reach and out of sight.
Treatment is then carried out through the entrance. Our technicians are trained and fully insured, and they will answer questions about what they are doing. We do not describe the method in this article. If you are curious about whether the empty nest can later be taken down, ask when you book.
If you are a Melton Mowbray resident working from home, it is fine to stay indoors during the visit, but stay away from windows and doors on the affected side.
A technician has encountered many wall nests, so there is nothing embarrassing about the state of your brickwork or the mess around the garden. Their only concern is a safe, clear route to the entrance.
While the technician works, other people at the property are best kept indoors with the windows on that side closed. If you have to leave the house for any reason, use a door away from the affected wall.
After the treatment
The technician will tell you what to expect and how long to stay away from the wall. A few wasps around the entrance for a short while afterwards is normal, so give the wall space until you are told otherwise.
Once activity has stopped, you can close the entrance. Repointing a gap or putting fine mesh over an air brick will make it harder for another queen to settle there. Queens begin looking from late April, so a repair done in winter or early spring is well timed.
It is best not to seal anything until the technician confirms it is safe, since blocking an active entrance can send wasps into the house.
If you rent your home, the repair may need to be agreed with your landlord. What is expected depends on your tenancy agreement, so check it or ask them directly.
Many people ask whether anything will be left behind. The technician will not leave equipment at the property, and there is nothing for you to clear up or dispose of. If wasps are found inside the building afterwards, simply let them fly out of a window.
Booking
To arrange a visit, call 0116 214 9259, or use the online booking form on the contact page. Colonies grow through summer and peak in August, with 2,000 to 10,000 wasps or more in a large nest, so it pays to book as soon as you spot a pattern.
Never approach a live nest yourself. Wasps can swarm and sting if they feel threatened, and a nest in a wall is not something to investigate with a torch.
Businesses can book in the same way. A shop front, workshop or office with wasps going in and out of the wall is dealt with at the same fixed price per nest.
If you notice other signs while you wait, such as wasps appearing indoors or a sudden increase in the flight path, add that to your notes. It helps the technician to see the whole picture, and it takes only a moment to mention it when they arrive.
