Wasp Nest in a Cavity Wall – How Professionals Treat Hidden Nests in Ratby
With a live nest in the wall, a few simple household routines keep children, pets and anyone with a sting allergy safer until the technician has been.
A busy nest next to a busy household
A wasp nest hidden in the wall is more of a worry when it sits near the places where children play, pets sleep or a family member is allergic. The sensible response is not to panic but to build a few simple habits around the wall until the nest has been treated.
What follows is general safety advice for the days between noticing the problem and the technician’s visit. It is not medical advice, and it does not replace seeking help if somebody is unwell.
A good rule of thumb is that the nearer people are to the nest, the more you should do to keep them apart. The wasps themselves are defending their home, not hunting you, and distance is the most effective protection.
A calm tone makes a big difference to children. Wasps are an ordinary part of summer, and a nest in the wall is a problem that a professional will sort out, so there is no need for anyone to feel scared.
Children
- Explain in simple words that the wasps live in the wall and that nobody goes near that spot.
- Move toys, paddling pools, bikes and sandpits away from the affected wall.
- Keep an adult nearby whenever children are outside on that side of the house.
- Keep doors and windows near the nest closed, particularly bedroom windows on warm days.
- Make sure children know not to swat at wasps or throw things at the wall.
If there is a nursery, playroom or bedroom directly on the other side of the wall, consider using another room for a few days if wasps have been coming indoors.
Teenagers with phones are often the keenest to get close for a video. A firm reminder that this is exactly how stings happen usually does the trick.
Younger children often want to watch the wasps. Offer a window on the far side of the house as an alternative, so curiosity is satisfied without anyone standing near the nest wall.
Pets
Dogs and cats are curious about buzzing and may sniff at the gap or snap at passing wasps. Keep them away from that wall, and close them in while the technician is at work. Garden-based pets such as rabbits in hutches should be moved if the hutch is close to the entrance.
A pet that has been stung may lick or paw at the area and become distressed. If your pet shows facial swelling or difficulty breathing, contact a vet straight away.
A final thought on pets: a dog that is not allowed out unsupervised may still dash across the garden after a wasp. Use a lead if you must go out on the nest side, and keep your visits short.
Cats that roam are harder to manage, since you cannot keep them indoors all day. At least keep food bowls and litter trays away from the nest wall, and close the cat flap if it is on the same side as the entrance.
If someone in the family is allergic
Tell us when you book so that we can take it into account. Let the person with the allergy know where the wasps are, and keep them away from the wall and any room where wasps have been getting in.
For the person involved, the usual medical advice applies: anyone with a known allergy should speak to their GP about what to do if stung. In Ratby, as elsewhere, call 999 for signs of a serious reaction such as swelling of the face, lips or throat, wheeze or difficulty breathing, dizziness or a widespread rash.
For an ordinary sting, wash the area, remove the sting if it can be seen and apply a cold pack.
If the person with the allergy carries medication prescribed by their doctor, make sure they know where it is and keep it close, as their GP advises. We cannot give advice on medication.
Around the house in general
- Keep bins closed and rinse sweet drink cans and bottles before recycling them.
- Do not leave food or drinks standing outside near the wall.
- Avoid hanging washing right beside the entrance.
- Avoid mowing or strimming close to the nest wall, as noise and vibration can agitate wasps.
- If a wasp lands on you, stay calm and move away slowly rather than flapping your arms.
It is also worth leaving the entrance alone. Blocking it can send wasps into the house, which is the last thing you want with children, pets or allergy in the picture.
A tidy outdoor space helps too. Windfall fruit, open food and uncovered rubbish all draw wasps in the late summer and add to the numbers near your wall.
Getting it dealt with
Our technicians are trained and fully insured, and treat the nest through the entry point the wasps use. We do not set out the method here, but you may ask questions on the phone, including whether the empty nest can be taken down afterwards. Keep the household away from the wall until the technician says it is safe.
A wasp nest is treated for a fixed £95 per nest, an additional nest on the same property is £35 and there is no call-out charge. We confirm the price by phone before attending, and nothing is done without your agreement. Ring 0116 214 9259 or use the booking form on the contact page. We are open seven days a week, offer same-day service and take domestic and commercial work.
A last point about timing. Because the colony grows through the summer, the household routines described above get harder to keep up the longer the nest remains. Arranging treatment early is kinder to everyone in the home.
