Wasp Nest in a Cavity Wall – How Professionals Treat Hidden Nests in Scraptoft

Tired mortar, cracked pointing and loose brickwork give queen wasps a way into the cavity, and a walk around the outside of your house can show where.

Start with a slow walk around the outside

If you suspect a nest in a cavity wall, the most useful thing you can do is look at the outer face of the brickwork on a dry, warm day. You are not searching for the nest itself, which you will never see. You are searching for the doorway.

Wasps can squeeze through remarkably small spaces. A gap of a centimetre or so, such as a crumbled joint, a chipped brick edge or a crack where a pipe passes through, is quite enough for a queen to explore in spring.

Take a notebook or your phone with you and photograph each suspicious gap, including a wider shot that shows where on the wall it sits. When you describe the position on the phone, details such as the height above the ground, the distance from the nearest window and the direction the wall faces make a real difference.

Brick walls of any age can develop these faults, because weather slowly wears away mortar. Nothing about your house is unusual if you find a few, and the presence of a gap does not mean a nest is certain; it only means a nest is possible.

Where the entrances tend to be

Walk the full perimeter slowly and keep a few metres back. Pay special attention to these places.

Wasps on a flight path will show you which gap is in use. A dark, dry slot with no activity is simply a defect. A slot with wasps moving in and out is a nest entrance.

Do not climb a ladder to take a closer look, and do not lean out of an upstairs window to inspect a gap at roof level. A fall is a far bigger risk than most stings, and a technician has the right equipment for working at height.

Why Scraptoft homeowners should not fill the gap

Seeing the hole, the natural instinct is to stuff it with filler straight away. Please do not. When wasps find their usual exit closed, they search for another one, and in a cavity wall that can lead along the void and out through a different crack, or into the building. A colony sealed in with a bulging, blocked entrance can create the very problem you were trying to avoid.

The sequence that works is treatment first, repair second. Once the colony has been dealt with, a gap can be repointed properly.

There is a second reason to wait. Filler squeezed into a gap with wasps still moving behind it can trap wasps in the narrow space, where they gnaw and crawl until they find a thinner section of wall. That is how some households end up with wasps appearing on the inner side.

Think about the wall as a whole. A single gap you can see is often only the visible end of a longer weakness, and a technician may point out others while they are on site.

What the technician will do

When our technician arrives, they will start by watching the wall, much as you have done, to confirm exactly where the wasps are going. They then treat the nest through that entry point. There is no need for bricks to be removed or for you to cut into plaster.

Training and full insurance are both in place for this kind of job. The method itself is not something we describe on this page, but you can ask questions on the phone before the visit. If you would like to know whether the empty nest can be taken down, ask when you book.

Afterwards you may see a few wasps near the opening for a short while. Keep your distance, keep doors and windows on that side shut, and let the technician advise you on when it is safe to go back to that part of the garden or house.

If the wall is high or the gap hard to reach, the technician will say so on arrival and plan accordingly. You will already have agreed the price on the phone, so there is nothing unexpected to deal with at the door.

Repairs once the wasps are gone

When the nest has been treated, it is worth sorting the weakness that let them in. A few repairs can make the wall less attractive to next year’s queens.

  1. Repoint any gaps in the mortar with fresh mortar rather than leaving holes.
  2. Fit fine mesh across air bricks so that air can still pass but insects cannot.
  3. Seal gaps around pipes and cables with a suitable exterior filler.
  4. Check the wall again in late April and May, since new queens begin looking for sites then.

A mason or builder can handle bigger brickwork repairs, but small jobs can often be done with a trowel and an afternoon.

A last tip is to keep a note of what you repaired and when. If wasps do turn up again next summer, you will know which area of the wall to inspect first.

Booking

For a wasp nest we charge a fixed £95 per nest, and a further nest on the same property is £35 per nest. There is no call-out fee. We confirm the price by phone before the technician comes and do nothing until you agree to it. Phone 0116 214 9259 or use the contact page booking form. Seven-day opening and same-day service are available, for homes and businesses alike.

If anyone at the address is allergic to wasp stings, let us know when booking.

Frequently asked questions

How big does a gap need to be for wasps to use it?
Quite small. A crumbled joint or a gap round a pipe is often enough for a queen to get in and start a nest.
Should I repoint the wall before the visit?
No. Repair the wall after the nest has been treated, so that you do not block wasps in or push them towards a different route.
Can an old nest in the wall attract wasps again?
Wasps do not generally reuse an old nest, but the same gap can attract new queens. That is why repairing the opening afterwards is worthwhile.
