Wasp Control for Stoughton Restaurants, Pubs and Commercial Premises

A shut-up outbuilding, a seasonal kiosk or a venue that has been quiet since winter can host a large nest by the time you reopen. This guide shows how to check.

The building that was left alone

Some businesses stand empty or half used for weeks: a seasonal kiosk, a function barn, a sports pavilion, a holiday-let office or a pub room that is only open at certain times. A queen looking for a sheltered, undisturbed place in spring will find them just as readily as any other.

By the time staff return to open up, a nest the size of a football may be inside the roof, a cupboard or a wall. The first sign is often wasps at the windows or a rustling sound behind a panel.

Stoughton is in Leicestershire, but the guidance applies to any business that closes in part of the year or leaves a building empty for long stretches.

Seasonal trade also means seasonal gaps in the daily check. A permanent business has someone looking at the building every morning; a seasonal one may have nobody for a month. A nest that begins in May can have grown to many thousands of wasps by the time the first booking of August arrives, so a short visit in June or July is worth the trouble.

Items stored over winter give wasps places to hide too. Folded parasols, stacked chairs, boxes of crockery, old awnings and rolled-up banners are all quiet, dark and dry. Before moving any of these, tap the box lightly or look into the folds from a distance for a sign of insects.

A check before you reopen

If you can, check the premises from outside before you open the doors for the season.

If you hear buzzing or see wasps inside, step back, close the door and leave the room alone. Do not go in to see how big it is.

It is worth checking the same spots again a few weeks later, in case a nest has started after your first visit. A colony that was absent in May can be well established by July, and the entrance is often small enough to miss on a single glance.

Opening up safely

If there are no signs of a nest, open windows and doors and ventilate the space. Keep your first visit short, and take a colleague. If you find wasps indoors, leave the room and phone for advice.

If anyone is stung, wash the area, remove the sting if visible and use a cold pack. For facial swelling, breathing difficulty, dizziness or a widespread rash, call 999.

A good rule is that a room with a nest should stay shut until the technician has been. If you must reach something in that room, ask the technician about it rather than going in yourself. If you share the building with another group, such as a club that hires the hall, tell them straight away and ask them to hold off using the affected area. Put the date, the position and the action taken in the diary.

Treatment for a closed-up site

The visit is the same as for any other premises. A trained and fully insured technician treats the nest for a fixed £95 per nest, with £35 for an additional nest on the same property. There is no call-out charge, and the price is confirmed on the phone first. Nothing is done until you agree. We are open seven days a week and offer same-day service for domestic and commercial customers.

Access can be the main question for an empty building. Tell us about keys, locks, alarms, and who will be on hand. If you want the empty nest taken down, ask when you book.

If the nest is in a roof space and the only entrance is through a hatch, tell us that when you ring. The access needs to be clear and safe for the technician, and we can talk through what that involves. Having the premises tidy and any stored items moved away from the hatch or the door saves time on the day.

Please say in advance whether any part of the site, such as a locked store, has to be opened before the technician can reach the nest. Having the keys with the right person on the day avoids delay and keeps the visit short.

Planning your next closure

At the end of the season, inspect and tidy the building. Close gaps you can reach, and keep doors shut. In spring, return to check regularly from late April, since that is when nests begin. Make it a standing item in your reopening list. To book, phone 0116 214 9259 or use the online form on the contact page.

If there is any chance that the building will be left empty again, ask the person who locks up to look at the outside as part of the routine and to note any wasps going in or out. A single line in a handover book is enough to make the next opening much easier.

Frequently asked questions

When should I check a seasonal building for wasps?
From late April is sensible, since that is when nests start. Check again in July before the busiest weeks.
What if I find wasps inside a room I have not used?
Leave the room, close the door and phone us. Do not go in to look.
Can you treat a nest in a building that is locked up?
Yes, if arrangements are made for access. Tell us about keys, alarms and who will meet the technician when you book.
