Wasp Nest in Your Garden Shed? Safe Treatment Options in Wigston

Not every shed nest is inside the shed, and a hole at its base or in the lawn nearby can be just as active and just as easy to disturb by accident.

When the nest is in the soil, not the shed

Many people picture a wasp nest as a grey ball hanging in a roof space, yet a good number of colonies are built underground. Wasps take over an old burrow, a gap beneath a shed base or a hollow beside a path, then enlarge it from inside. What you see on the surface is a small hole, perhaps the width of a coin or a little larger, with wasps moving in and out.

Sheds are often raised on bearers or slabs, so the shaded space underneath is attractive. A hole beside the corner or along the edge of the base is worth a second look.

Ground nests also appear beneath decking, in banks beside hedges, and under sheds that rest on loose slabs. In each case the entrance can shift after rain or when the soil collapses, so a hole you noticed last week might have a second one nearby this week.

How people stumble into trouble

Ground nests catch people out because they are easy to miss. The most common accident happens when somebody mows the lawn or strims the edge of the path and the vibration stirs the colony. Others come from kneeling beside the shed to fix a hinge or stack firewood against the wall.

Any of these can leave you facing a cloud of angry wasps at ankle height with very little warning.

Marking the spot without going close

If you suspect a ground nest, mark the area from a distance rather than from the hole itself. Place a bucket or a garden chair some metres away from the entrance as a visual reminder, or use a length of tape across the path. Keep dogs on a lead near that corner and tell visitors who use the garden.

Do not stuff the hole, cover it or flood it. Blocking an opening can make wasps dig fresh exits, which may emerge somewhere more awkward, and pouring liquids into it will agitate the whole colony.

Hold off on any lawn work in that corner until the nest has been treated, even if the grass looks long. A few days of untidy lawn is a small price to pay.

If you are not certain, throw nothing at the spot and do not use a torch at dusk to check, as light draws wasps out. The simplest check is a few minutes of observation from a seated position at a distance in the middle of the day.

Booking treatment for a ground nest

Ground nests are treated in the same way as nests elsewhere, as far as the booking goes: a fixed £95 per nest, £35 for an additional nest on the same property, no call-out charge, and the figure is agreed on the phone before the technician comes. We can offer same-day service, seven days a week, to domestic and commercial customers around Wigston and neighbouring places.

The technician is trained and fully insured, and will want to know roughly where the hole is relative to the shed, what ground cover is there and whether pets or children use that part of the garden. If someone is allergic to stings, say so when you call.

If you would like to know about the empty nest, ask at booking whether it can be taken down.

Having the area marked before the technician comes, as described above, saves time. A bucket placed at a safe distance and a short description of the ground around it are plenty.

After treatment: tidying and prevention

Stay away from the hole until the technician says otherwise. Foraging wasps may still return briefly. Once you have been given the all-clear, you can fill the hole with soil or sand and firm it down, and restore the turf if needed.

To reduce the chance of a repeat visit, remove loose boards and old pallets from beside the shed, and avoid leaving heaps of rubbish or compost against the base where small mammals might dig burrows that wasps later reuse.

For bookings, ring 0116 214 9259 or complete the online form on the contact page.

Check the spot again after a week. A bare patch with no wasp activity is a good sign, and if you notice any ongoing traffic, ring us and describe what you see. Fill the hole and level the ground only when you are sure it has gone quiet.

Soil, weather and why holes keep appearing

Wasps tend to reuse existing cavities, such as a vole run or a gap left by a rotted root, and they widen them with their jaws. Dry weather lets them dig more easily, while heavy rain can flood a burrow and push the colony to relocate. That may explain why a nest seems to have appeared overnight near the shed after a wet week.

Look for loose crumbs of soil around the entrance, which are pushed out as the nest grows. In late summer the opening may become larger as the number of wasps rises.

If the ground is sloping, a nest may sit at the top of a bank, where an unwary step on the grass above could cave in a chamber. Treat any patch of disturbed soil near the shed with respect.

Tell us what the surrounding ground is like when you call, for example whether it is lawn, gravel, bare earth or paving. The technician can then bring suitable equipment to deal with it.

Frequently asked questions

How can I tell a ground nest from ants or bees?
Wasps fly purposefully in and out of one hole in a steady stream. Ants tend to crawl in lines, and bumblebees are rounder and furrier. If you are unsure, call us with a description.
Is it safe to cut the grass near the hole if I am careful?
No. Vibration from a mower can provoke the colony, so leave the lawn alone in that area until the nest has been treated.
Will you fill the hole afterwards?
We treat the nest. Filling the hole is a simple job you can do yourself once the technician confirms it is safe.
